School funding (district layer)

Official NJDOE state aid, fall enrollment, and Taxpayers’ Guide spending — by school district, not by parcel. This is not a slice of your general tax rate and not a school-quality rating.

How to read this layer

The school percent on a town rate bar is the local school levy’s share of school + county + municipal cents. State aid is already netted out of that levy before the rate is struck. Numbers here are why one district’s levy looks small and another’s looks large — they are not a fourth bar on the bill.

  • Aid year: FY2027 (K-12 state school aid notice, excl. debt service)
  • Enrollment year: Fall 2025-2026
  • Spend year: Taxpayers' Guide 2025 release (2023-24 actual total spending per pupil). No later audited total-spending year is published.

Those three calendars are printed separately on purpose. Do not mash them into one “2026 funding” headline.

Two opposite districts (same metric)

One metric at a time: FY2027 K–12 state aid (excluding debt service). These are not winners and losers — they show why local school tax can look different when aid differs.

District FY27 K–12 aid Fall 25–26 enrollment Aid / pupil Spend / pupil (23–24 actual)
Stafford Twp (Ocean) — K–6 local district; regional high school is separate $5.48M 2,735 $2,005 $23,141
Newark City (Essex) $1,386.72M 43,216 $32,088 $34,409

Aid / pupil divides FY2027 K–12 aid by fall 2025–26 enrollment. Spend / pupil is the 2023–24 actual from the 2025 Taxpayers’ Guide, the latest audited total-spending year NJDOE has published. There is no 2025 or 2026 audited total yet.

What this is not

  • Not a school-quality rating, GreatSchools score, or “good schools” list.
  • Not a fourth slice of the municipal general-rate bar.
  • Not an equal-funding calculator (“if aid were equal, your tax would be…”).
  • Not a 1:1 map from district to MOD-IV municipality — regionals, K–8 send/receive, vocational, and charters break that join.

District codes are NJDOE district codes, not MOD-IV municipal codes. Regional, K-8, vocational, special services, and charter districts do not map 1:1 to a single property-tax municipality. See also How NJ taxes work and methodology.
